Question:

I want to be entirely vegan, but I am allergic to nuts, [except almonds in moderation] soy, corn some beans, avocado, barley and all condiments or fermented foods, so, also mushrooms and, as it turns out, algae. How do I get protein that doesn\'t bore me into fits? I\'ve been eating cannelini beans and rice but it makes me fall asleep.

Re: Question:

Hi Katyi,

Try consulting with a nutritionist who is vegan or vegan-friendly. They can help you find a variety of foods that would be OK for you. There is a HUGE variety of vegan foods out there. Health food stores are a good place to find a lot of them.

Regarding protein, don't be worried. Pretty much the only way to become protein deficient is to actually be starving.

Question: Cooked milk?

My husband who is not vegetarian or vegan continues to cook with pasturized milk and eggs. Like right now he is making french toast and recently i have switched to soy milk. He will not use soy milk, if the milk is cooked is that better than just drinking it? Or will it still contain like the pus, debris, and who knows what else.

I am so glad that I found your blog today. About 8 weeks ago I went vegetarian (mostly Vegan with the expicteon of mozzarella cheese which I have no good reason for still wanting and eating) I had been breastfeeding my daughter for the past 8 months and when my milk supply changed and her sleeping habits changed I got worried, called my doctor and asked if it was about the vegetarian shift and I was basically chastised by every one. I became so worried that I was harming my baby I started eating meat and cheese again. The milk supply and the bad sleeping continued and I felt so angry that I had given up something that was making ME feel better. Thank you for re-inspiring me.

Re: Question: Cooked milk?

As long as the milk is pasteurized it should not contain any dangerous bacteria. It may still contain artificial hormones, and could have cow epithelial (skin) cells or other kinds of cells in it.

Question: Which beans do I have to soak before I incorporate them into a recipe?

I want to try and make some different kinds of lentils. I am new to the vegan community but I have always been mainly a vegetable and fruit eater in general. I want to buy my foods raw and make a good lentil soup/dish. Can anyone give me a good recipe with nice instructions on what beans are good/how to prepare them? I can use all the help I can get. Thanks.

Question:

Hi! I am trying to keep sodium intake to below 1,000 mg per day. This limits me basically to veggies and fruit, beans, nuts, seeds. The problem is that I am losing more weight than I want. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi Lu,
I see no reason why you would exclude grains from your diet. They are a healthy source of many nutrients including the B complex and protein. If you are losing weight then don\'t restrict yourself. They also compliment nuts, beans, and seeds to boost the protein in your diet. Do some research on the many types of healthy grains available and enjoy yourself :) Also don\'t forget to eat healthy fats like extra-virgin olive oil. They can only do your body good.

Hi, Susan. Thanks for your reply. Grains seem to make me bloated and uncomfortable and I do avoid them for the most part. I am careful that I get enough healthy fats with olive oil and nuts and seeds. I like the low sodium thing and feel good but I am 5'11" and weigh 130 pounds and I'm told I'm too thin. I certainly eat as much as I want but just need more calories. Any healthy high calorie options out there? Thanks!

I can understand that. Some grains do that to me too. Bread is the worst. But I would suspect a total lack of grains would keep your weight low. Have you tried quinoa? It isn't actually a grain but a seed. Tastes a bit like rice, is great in a stir-fry and prepared many other ways, and is a good source of protein. What about potatoes, both sweet and white? What about tahini with lemon on top of your veggies? You could make yourself nutrient bars with peanut butter, dark chocolate, nuts, seeds, and dried fruits or buy them. Those are the most calorie and nutrient dense foods I can think of. Hope that helps :)

Re: Question: Am i a vegan or not

Hello Lisa,

Veganism is not a religion and we are not dogmatic. Your boyfriend is wrong. You made a mistake, so what. You are doing very well by being a vegan for six months. I have been a vegan for 16 years and a vegetarian for 29 years before that and very shortly after becoming vegan I saw some fake meats on sale at a very low price. They had egg whites in them. I purchased them and ate them. I have never done that again and have no intention to do it again. I am still a vegan and so are you.

One other thing: Almost every vegan has accidently eaten something that has flesh in it. We only found out later and probably sometime we never even knew that we accidently ate something with flesh, dairy, or eggs in it. Do not beat yourself up. Just keep up the good work. From a fellow vegan.

Question: Veganism in Relation to Equalization of Animal Populations

I am wondering if you can either answer or direct me to information regarding the vegan perspective on hunting to equalize animal populations. In a class discussion, an individual questioned if hunting animals in order to help preserve other animal populations was moral [ex: killing wolves (the predator) to preserve deer (the prey)]. I did not have a response and would like to gain more information on the vegan perspective toward this situation. Any information would be much appreciated.

Re: Question: Veganism in Relation to Equalization of Animal Populations

It is not moral to kill wolves to protect deer populations. If these populations are fouled up, it's because humans interfered with the populations to begin with. Wolves and deers had a healthy balance for many thousands of years before humans started tinkering with them. The best thing humans can do is leave them alone. Also, humans cannot easily determine who is the sick, old or weak. Wolf and deer populations stay fit and strong when nature thins them out. When humans do the thinning, humans typically kill the stronger members thereby weakening their populations. Veganism is about leaving nonhumans alone.

Question: Toddlers and veganism

Hi all :)
So I have just decided to become a vegitarian with the goal of eventually going full vegan :) So far so good, it's really a lot easier than I thought to omit meat and diary from my diet in most cases. However my question is in regards to my son. I'd like to put him on a vegitarian diet. Not necessarily vegan- yet anyway. I know my son will still get ample nutrition regardless of weather or not meat or dairy is in his at home diet. BUT is it possible for him to be a healthy vegitarian eater with the "option" of meat. I can't control what he will be eating outside of the home, and have a feeling people- like my mother may be quick to give him meat against my request. If this happens will he get sick. LOL sorry if this doesn't make any sense I am new to all of this. ANY information would be great - thank you

Re: Question: Toddlers and veganism

Hi!

Some vegans who accidentally eat meat have some intestinal distress. Others don't have any problem. Either way, eating some meat won't cause any permanent damage.

Don't forget to make sure your little one is getting enough Calcium, B12, and other nutrients.

Ahhh thank you for the great reply!. Funny thing is little man has had some digestive issues that I have observed recently. However after taking him off meat, such issues have come to a halt :). I sometimes get paranoid though, that he isn't getting enough nutrients, although I am sure he is. But if somebody out there has a good menu templet with meal suggestions please send them my way. Also big question where can I find b12 vitamins for both myself and my son. That are vegan friendly :)

Hi. I grow wheat grass for my rabbits and rats (it is a wonderful, heathy treat for them), but I cannot find animal-free potting soil at any garden centers here in Colorado. Question:

I need to know whether as a Vegan it will be safe to:

Eat Turkish Delight
& chew Beechies

Somehow I dont trust the ingredients in both items, unless you can help me think otherwise. I have read the ingredients on the packages, but I need to know a Vegan's opinion.

Jelly sold in supermarkets also doesnt warn anyone on its package (ingredients) that it contains an animal product. Only after searching out the products did I find the truth.

Please help.

Re: are sulfites vegan?

I had to do some research on this one!
Sulfites occur naturally in some foods (like grapes). They come from sulfur in the soil.
Other sulfites are added as preservatives. They come from burning sulfur or performing a chemical reaction. I can't find any indication that they're not vegan.

Re: Question: duration of use

Hello Sara,

I often purchase vegan foods that are going out of date that day or the next day. Many times they stay in my refrigerator for a few days past the expiration date. I have never got sick from any of them. Also the health food stores say that it is safe for various days past the expiration date. That day depends on what the item is. So I would eat the yoghourt two weeks past the expiration date and not worry about it. Breads and much more can be frozen for months as still be good. I do this often especially when I get a great deal of the food.
